Youth Leadership / Internship

Taking a break Cooking

Whomever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.

- Matthew 18:5

Harbor House youth programs follow the model of a family — a family that works, plays, and prays together. In the Harbor House family, high school interns in the Youth Leadership Program are our older brothers and sisters, who learn directly from staff and volunteers and help to encourage and guide our younger siblings in the community.

Many high school youth in Oakland are disadvantaged from circumstances that offer them little direction in life and few figures who will act has positive mentors to help them take hold of the life that God has for them. Harbor House seeks to fill this gap through the Youth Leadership Program, which is designed to educate, nurture, and empower young individuals who will become catalysts for positive change in our community. Harbor House staff offer their love and guidance to high school youth, who in turn are entrusted with the responsibility to help lead activities and set positive examples for younger kids in our after-school programs. Interns benefit from this program through forming relationships with mentoring staff and volunteers, developing responsibility and job skills, and receiving a small monthly stipend.

Ways to support our program:

Be a Mentor

Every volunteer who comes to share their love at Harbor House becomes a blessing to both participants and staff, regardless of their skills or abilities. Those volunteers who are interested in serving our high school interns can do so by forming a mentoring relationship with an intern, sharing their skills and experience with our group in a YLP Training Session, or simply coming to volunteer alongside us in our after-school and summer programs.

Financial Support

Programs at Harbor House are primarily funded by churches, foundations, and individuals who desire to be a part of serving those in need and seeing the kingdom of God advance in the lives of young people in Oakland. Those with financial means are encouraged to support the Harbor House Youth Leadership Program through grants and donations, which enable us to offer a life-changing opportunity to disadvantaged high school youth in our community.
