Harbor House offers after-school programs for youth in Oakland ranging from elementary to junior high school. In order to respond to the needs of youth in our community with flexibility, love, and discipline, our programs are based on a family model — one that works, plays, prays, eats, argues and resolves together. Participants in our after-school programs make up the younger brothers and sisters in our family, who are guided, assisted, and encouraged by our older high school interns and Harbor House staff and volunteers.

Harbor House seeks to help youth overcome the academic, spiritual, emotional and physical challenges they face through our activities, which include:

Academic tutoring to develop math and writing skills, including one-on-one help with homework and supplemental Harbor House work to help further academic achievement.

Sports activities, such as hockey, basketball, soccer and baseball, through which we develop character, friendships, and respect for one another.

A daily devotion, to help us know God and His transformative love in a real and personal way.

Snack time, which offers us an opportunity to pray together and talk about our day in a safe and loving environment.

Volunteer-led activities such as art, gardening, cooking and dance, which allow for others to share their lives and passions with our youth.

Field trips designed to broaden the worldview and horizons of our youth beyond the immediate environment of the city.

Programs at Harbor House are offered free of charge and operate year-round, Monday through Thursday. Hours of operation are from 3:15 – 5:30 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and from 1:30 – 5:00 on Wednesday.

Come Volunteer

Every volunteer who comes to share their love at Harbor House becomes a blessing to both participants and staff, regardless of their skills or abilities. Volunteers can be plugged in as tutors and mentors for our youth, and those volunteers who wish to share their gifts and passions with us often end up developing new programs to serve youth in our community.

Financial Support

Programs at Harbor House are primarily funded by churches, foundations, and individuals who desire to be a part of serving those in need and seeing the kingdom of God advance in the lives of young people in Oakland. Those with financial means are encouraged to support Harbor House through grants and donations, which enable the continued implementation and growth of our programs in the community.
